Dr. Shabnam Rangwala, is a graduate Occupational therapist with over three decades of clinical experience in the field of Occupational therapy. Her experience spans from working with newborn infants to adults with disability. Under the leadership of Dr. Mithu Alur, Founder Chairperson ADAPT (formerly The Spastics Society of India) she has worked on several National and International Projects that looked at disability policies in India. She is the recipient of the BOND International Award, UK 2020, for her work in low- and middle-income countries with UK based charity, MAITS. Dr. Rangwala currently trains nationally and internationally on family centered practice using the ICF approach in LMIC’s. Her Publications and Research papers include:
As an Occupational therapist, in her clinical practice, Dr. Rangwala has been using visual perceptual interventions with her clients. With current evidence-based research studies, in the area of visual rehabilitation for children with developmental disabilities, she has a keen interest in exploring this aspect further, especially with respect to her work in LMIC’s.
Visual rehabilitation is a team approach and team members include an ophthalmologist, optometrist and visual rehabilitation therapist. Visual rehabilitation is aimed at enhancing visual skills and addressing challenges in visual processing. It employs a combination of therapeutic activities and exercises that focus on improving eye teaming, tracking, and convergence. These in turn, are essential to perform functional activities such as reading, writing, and engaging with the environment or the world around us. Therefore, visual rehabilitation targets specific visual skills that contribute towards academic learning and functionality
While vision therapy cannot be not a standalone solution, its inclusion in a multidisciplinary or transdisciplinary strategy, enhances its potential to positively impact the lives of children with developmental disabilities. Early intervention is the key factor, and integrating vision therapy into a comprehensive treatment plan alongside other therapies provides a synergistic approach. Improved visual abilities impact a child’s learning experience and thus have a great role to play in furthering their overall quality of life.
In LMIC’s the role of the visual rehabilitation therapist continues to be ill defined and thus, a CVI society for India can play a lead role in addressing this much neglected issue. Until then, ALL therapists and more specifically an occupational therapist must step in to provide a crucial role in visual rehabilitation. Therapists can also play a larger role of transfer of knowledge by developing as Master trainers in visual rehabilitation to disseminate knowledge to different target audiences that form a part of the child’s universe. These may include special educators, mainstream school teachers, employers, communication designers, architects among a few.
There is a long way to go and a lot to be done and the CVI society of India can support in charting the way for all LMIC’s.
